WEDNESDAY WALK ABOUT When one is walking around on foot, we often find small things that are so easily missed when driving around. How beautiful is this Japanese Silk moth? The Japanese Oak Silk Moth (Antheraea yamamai), called Yamamayu-ga in Japanese (so we read), is one of Japan’s largest moths and a striking member of the Saturniidae family. Beyond its impressive presence, it is historically valued for producing a rare wild silk known as “Yamamayu silk.”

SOMETHING FOR A SATURDAY Just a little Tortoise going for a walk. Their beautiful, spotted shell patterns resemble a leopard’s coat — that’s how they got their name! Leopard tortoises are strong walkers and can travel long distances in search of food and water. They love grazing on grasses, succulents, and wildflowers — true little eco-gardeners that help disperse seeds! After the rains, they become more active — feeding, mating, and even soaking in puddles to cool off. Like other tortoises, they can absorb oxygen through the thin linings of their throats and cloaca (a fascinating backup to help survive in dry times). With good conditions and safety from predators, they can live 50–100 years! Unlike some other species of tortoises, they can pull their head, legs, and tail completely inside their shell for safety.

WEDNESDAY WALK ABOUT When one is walking around on foot, we often find small things that are so easily missed when driving around. Robber Flies of Zimbabwe, belonging to the family **Asilidae**, are powerful predatory insects found across Zimbabwe’s diverse habitats – from open grasslands and woodlands to rocky outcrops and savanna. Appearance: Robber flies are usually slender, long-legged, and often have a bristly “moustache” of hairs called a **mystax**, which protects their face when catching prey. They are agile fliers with strong bodies, and many species are grey, brown, or black, helping them blend into their environment. Predatory Lifestyle: These insects are skilled aerial hunters. They catch their prey in mid-air, often other flying insects such as bees, wasps, beetles, butterflies, grasshoppers, and even other flies. Once caught, the robber fly injects its prey with digestive enzymes through its sharp proboscis, turning the insides into liquid which it then drinks. Role in the Ecosystem: Though fearsome, robber flies play an important ecological role. By keeping populations of other insects in check, they help maintain balance in the environment. They are considered beneficial predators in agriculture, as they may reduce numbers of pest insects. Robber flies are widespread throughout the country and are often seen resting on rocks, twigs, or fence posts, waiting patiently for prey to pass by. In the Matobo Hills, their camouflage makes them almost invisible against granite outcrops until they suddenly dart into the air after an insect. Did You Know? Robber flies are also called **“assassin flies”** because of their efficient hunting skills. Their larvae live in soil or rotting wood, where they are also predatory, feeding on soft-bodied insects. Some species mimic bees or wasps in appearance, giving them protection from predators.

WEDNESDAY WALK ABOUT When one is walking around on foot, we often find small things that are so easily missed when driving around. Not all things are as they appear! This critter is known as a Katydid. Key characteristics and information about this type of insect: Camouflage: Katydids are known for their excellent camouflage, often mimicking leaves in shape and color, as seen in the image. Habitat: Many species, including leaf-mimic katydids, are arboreal and can be found in the canopy of trees and other foliage. Geographic Distribution: Species like Zabalius ophthalmicus are found widespread in southern, eastern, and central Africa, which aligns with our location here in Matopos. Diet: Some katydids are known to feed on vegetation, and certain species' larvae feed on acacia trees. Nocturnal Activity: Many katydids are nocturnal and are known for their strident mating calls, often heard at night.

They give alarm calls when disturbed, which can serve to warn other animals (and humans) of predators or intruders. Some keepers use guineafowl as "watch birds" for their vocal alarms to alert to predators. Guineafowl are not generally tame in the same way as chickens; they are wilder in temperament and may not tolerate close human handling or confinement well.

Southern Ground Hornbills are magnificent birds that captivate all who encounter them! They are social creatures, often seen in pairs or small groups, which makes spotting them even more delightful! These hornbills play an important role in their ecosystems as they help control insect populations. Drimia capensis is a geophytic flowering plant native to southwestern South Africa, known for its tall flower spikes and adaptations to arid environments. Classification and Habitat Family: Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae. Found here on our property at Farmhouse. Habitat: Prefers reddish sand or clay soils, often found in limestone-derived areas. It thrives in arid conditions, storing resources in its large underground bulb to survive long periods of drought. Sources Physical Characteristics Growth Form: Drimia capensis is a perennial bulbous plant that can reach heights of 1 to 2 meters. It has a partially subterranean bulb that is relatively large. Leaves: The leaves are grey, erect, and rounded lanceolate, measuring 30 to 50 cm in length. They can have mildly undulating margins and are typically dry by the time the flowers bloom. Flowers: The plant produces pale yellow-cream flowers with green midribs, which appear on long, slender racemes from November to March, after the leaves have dried. FARMHOUSE FRIDAY Very often here at the lodge you can see the Verreaux Eagles, resting on the rocks behind us. It is always wonderful to see them around. Day visits are allowed at Farmhouse, but bookings are essential. Make sure you book before you head out to us, just incase there is a private function or we are fully booked.
